Electric Bike Safety Guide
Rider safety is Droyd’s priority. While we are constantly developing and adding safety features onto our products, we’re also proud to say that we partner with preferred safety-testing laboratories to ensure every Droyd product is tested to meet or exceed industry standards. This includes the testing of our lithium-ion battery packs to ensure they meet UL2272 standards, testing against ASTM international standards, or against those set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Because these testing standards establish the basis for safety in our industry, Droyd proudly aligns with these standards so that we may offer parents safe, reliable, and fun electric ride-on toys for their children.
Certifications
🌟 UL Certification 🌟
The advent of electric bikes, hoverboards, and skateboards a little over a decade ago brought in a new era of kids ride-on toys. And while such ride-on toys—many boasting lithium-ion batteries for improved run times and lighter weight— introduced riders to faster and more unique experiences, there soon became a need for safety guidelines aimed at improving safety and compliance within the world of electric ride-on toys. This resulted in the introduction of the UL2272 standard for lithium-ion battery powered products—a U.S. certification awarded to electric mobility devices that have met a comprehensive system of tests. Droyd is proud to state that all of our electric ride-on toys are tested to meet the UL2272 standards, and we’ve so since day one.
🌟 Children’s Product Certificate (CPSC) 🌟
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) sets the bar for safety when it comes to consumer products. Within the CPSC’s wide-reaching authority are specific guidelines that are set to protect consumers—kids, specifically—from unreasonable risks against serious injury or worse. Droyd is proud to state that we’ve passed specific Codes of Federal Regulation that CPSC requires of all children’s ride-on toys.
🌟 ASTM Certification 🌟
ASTM international standards provide a uniform framework for testing and evaluation to ensure consistency and quality in the products, materials, and services that comply with these standards. While the list of attributes tested against this standard is long, a few notable tests include: appropriate age grading, toxicology (paint safety), mechanical tests (wheels, torque, impact, tension, compression, etc…). Proudly, all Droyd children’s ride-on toys are ASTM F963-17 certified under the Children's toy category.
Electric Bike Safety Guide
Electric bikes can be a fantastic mode of transportation and recreation for kids, providing them with a sense of independence and adventure. However, it's crucial to prioritize their safety while riding these bikes. Here are some key considerations for electric bike safety for kids.
Safety Gear
First and foremost, it is essential for children to wear proper safety gear. This includes a well-fitting helmet that meets safety standards. A helmet protects their head in case of a fall or collision and should always be worn while riding an electric bike. Additionally, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards can provide added protection and reduce the risk of injuries.
Parental Supervision
Supervision and guidance are critical when kids are riding electric bikes. Parents or responsible adults should ensure that children are riding in safe areas away from traffic and potential hazards. Kids should be educated on traffic rules, road signs, and safe riding practices. It's important for them to understand the importance of following speed limits, using hand signals for turning, and being aware of their surroundings.
Age Restrictions
Age-appropriate electric bikes should be selected for children. It's important to choose an electric bike that is suitable for their size, weight, and age. Most electric bikes for kids come with speed limiters and adjustable power settings to ensure they ride at safe speeds. These features allow parents to control the bike's speed and gradually increase it as the child gains experience and confidence.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance of electric bikes is crucial for safety. Parents or caregivers should ensure that the brakes, tires, and other components are in good working condition. Regularly check the battery and charging system to avoid any unexpected issues while riding. Teaching kids basic maintenance, such as checking tire pressure and cleaning the bike, can instill a sense of responsibility and help keep the bike in optimal condition.
Communication
Lastly, open communication and ongoing supervision are key. Parents should maintain an open dialogue with their children about the importance of electric bike safety. Encourage them to ask questions and address any concerns they may have. Regularly check on their riding skills and habits, and provide guidance as needed.
By following these safety guidelines, parents can help ensure that kids have an enjoyable and safe experience while riding electric bikes. It's crucial to prioritize their well-being and provide them with the necessary knowledge and tools to ride responsibly. Electric bikes can be a wonderful way for kids to explore the outdoors, improve their fitness, and develop a lifelong love for cycling.
